Nokia to bring NFC to New York commuters

The handset maker has signed a deal with the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority to test cloud-based NFC ticketing with Nokia phones by the end of 2011, the company has told NFC World. NFC payments will then arrive on Nokia phones for the first time at the beginning of 2012.

Last weekend I visited the Museum of London. I had heard that Nokia’s NFC Hub initiative had recently set up an interactive service that used signs enabled with near field communication (NFC). Visitors with an NFC-equipped mobile phone would be able to place the device on any NFC tag in the museum and learn more about the objects on display.

NFC Hub is a model of simplicity

In a sign of the imminent mass market arrival of NFC ‘touch-to...’ technology, Nokia has launched a service for creating NFC tags and posters. The NFC Hub enables users to order NFC tags pre-programmed with Facebook and Foursquare check-ins, Twitter follows or any custom web address. It is intended to expedite the rollout of NFC tags in shops, public venues and company offices.
